Community Paramedicine for Primary Healthcare Equity

About this Initiative.

The report examines key factors contributing to successful community paramedicine programs in rural areas, focusing on the Aisokinaipiyokiiks Community Paramedicine program in the Siksika Nation, southern Alberta, Canada.

This program enhances the health and wellness of Siksika Nation members by connecting them to health and social services and meeting various care needs, such as wound care, medication reviews, intravenous infusions, and in-home detox for alcohol and opioid addiction. Community paramedics provide short-term care for low-acuity illnesses under medical supervision.

The report evaluates the program's strengths, challenges, operational model, and evaluation methods to inform other communities interested in adopting similar care models.

Recommendations for successful implementation are provided, guided by key questions that analyze the program's approach.
